Century Tuna Superbods Run 2010

Our minds are set to make our first run next month. There are two races scheduled: the first one is the Condura run scheduled on February 7; and the second one is the Superbods run on February 21. We choose the latter so we can make enough preparation. Another reason why we choose the second one is that it would be the first leg of the Rio Trilogy. We printed and filled up the registration form.

Six hundred bucks for the 10km run? I looked back at last year’s races. I think the most expensive race we made was the Urbanathlon, which cost us 450 pesos. That was the best race I also joined thus far because of the challenges. However, for this Superbods, what perks would I get from running this race to justify the costly registration?

The hottest celebrities? I guess this is the primary come-on of the race with Derek Ramsey heading the pack and Coach Rio pulling in his own followers. A showbiz acculturated Filipino would never miss this chance to join in with a crowd of sexy and hunky celebrities even just to ogle on their bodies and faces alike. Frankly, this made me choose the race over Condura.

The biggest go-see? This is the term I suspect for auditions for models. Having this after the race would be a new showcase. Fitness enthusiasts would be flocking the area displaying their wares. Voyeurs would likely join the fun. This is the best time to see what goes on in the modeling world. It could be a must-see.

The timing chips? This made a debut last year I think. This is used to time individual runners without the use of the traditional and conventional clocks we usually see at the finish line. This is supposed to make accurate timing of personal race records. It is a small gadget with accurate measurement.

The running singlet and loot bag? Singlets or jerseys are free giveaways upon registration. Each year, every participant of races anticipates good design and fabric. Usually, it is also a deciding factor whether one must join the race or not. A good singlet means an entry. Likewise, the loot bag is a good incentive for runners after they reach the finish line. A promise of a loot bag would also win an entry to the race.

The amenities? Runners are beginning to demand organize and systematic operations of races. Baggage counters, urinals, water stations, and queues must be strategically available for the convenience of the participating runners. If a particular race could provide such conveniences, it could draw in huge participation.

These are the promises of the Superbod run. They are shoo-ins for the race and we considered them one by one to decide whether to run or not. After an hour of deliberations, we decided to call it off. We thought that the price is not worth of something that one could afford without.

I choose to run mainly because I wanted to get fit. I wanted to improve my endurance and stamina for my other physical activities. I could run alone. Running is also the cheapest hobby and sport one could engage in. All you need is a running shoes, shorts, and shirt. I do not need to buy anything every time I run. I do not need to rent a court. All I need is a good pavement. Running for the benefit of someone or for a cause is also something good, but it should be according to your own limitations. Before, I thought running is simply running. There is no considerations, no frills. Today, running is becoming a conscious effort. Is it because of commercialization, consumerism, technological pressures, or simply the superficial needs of participants?

As for my friends who choose to run the Superbods, I will see you there with my 70-300mm DSLR. I would capture your triumph in your unguarded moments.
